Your Help Is Needed Immediately on Crucial Federal Veterinary Medicine Legislation

The KVMA learned over the weekend that veterinarians have the perfect opportunity to influence the passage of the Veterinary Public Health Workforce Expansion Act (VPHWEA) if they act IMMEDIATELY.

The KVMA has been told that Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.), a veterinarian, is prepared to offer the language in the Veterinary Public Health Workforce Expansion Act today as an amendment to the Higher Education Reauthorization Act. The veterinary profession all over the country needs to show strong grassroots support for Sen. Allard's efforts.

The Veterinary Public Heath Workforce Expansion Act would establish a competitive grants program to build a capacity in veterinary medical education and expand the workforce of veterinarians engaged in public health practice and biomedical research.

Homeland Security Presidential Directive 9 calls for the establishment of a program nearly identical to the VPHWEA.

Call Sen. Sam Brownback and Sen. Pat Roberts IMMEDIATELY and ask them to vote yes on Sen. Allard's amendment adding the Veterinary Public Health Workforce Expansion Act to the higher education bill being debated today. Call between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Contact Sen. Brownback at 202-224-6521 and Sen. Roberts at 202-224-4774 and leave a message similar to the one below with whomever answers the phone:

Phone Script

"Hello, my name is (name) and I'm calling from (home town), Kansas.

I have a message for Sen. (Brownback) (Roberts).

Please tell him to vote yes on the Allard amendment to the higher education bill being debated today. Thank you very much."

After you have made your calls, contact two other acquaintances (co-workers, family members, friends, neighbors) and ask them to do the same.

Upon completion of their calls, ask them to contact two more people and request that they do the same and so and son on.

Other Senators can be contacted at the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 if the people you ask to make additional calls are from other states. Back to top
